What makes Bluemix Cloud Functions so fast?
It seems like a simple question, but could you please explain what makes Cloud Functions so fast?
I don’t see any machine code in the Node runtime, but I know that the Node runtime is compiled to machine code, and I would assume that this compiled code is fast.
Moreover, the Node runtime is in some way coupled with the cloud provider’s infrastructure. There will be a provisioning step. This is quite slow, right?
Any additional things that I’m not seeing that makes Cloud Functions fast?
A:
This is a good question, but as I hinted in my comment on the question, I don’t have an definitive answer. My gut feeling is that there is a lot going on under the hood. Here’s what I can tell you so far.
Cloud Functions takes care of a lot of the hard work for you.
The first couple of minutes of a Cloud Function’s life start out pretty slow as the triggers (anything that’s send to the cloud functions service, like a HTTP call) receive a look-up of the running functions and execute it. This can be relatively slow if the function isn’t ‘loaded’ or available. But once the function has started execution, after about 5 seconds, the latency starts to dwindle.
This helps to explain why you are seeing the latency drop off rapidly after the first couple of minutes of a Cloud Function’s life.
Load balancing and execution
Next, we come to the details of where the functions and requests actually get scheduled.
There are a number of options for this, but they all seem to share two characteristics.
The Cloud Functions service can respond with a single Cloud Function.
The other case is that Cloud Functions
