Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a protocol that helps devices on an Ethernet infrastructure locate one another. CDP broadcasts a message containing the IP addresses of devices in a network. These messages are known as “CDP advertisements” or “CDP messages.” CDP advertisements are normally sent at intervals of 10 to 100 milliseconds. A device that listens for CDP messages will see a series of advertisements over time. These devices will be referred to as CDP listeners. A switch or router that has the CDP capability can listen for CDP advertisements sent by other devices in the same broadcast domain. When a device finds another device on the same broadcast domain, it may join a multicast group so that it can join a virtual local area network (VLAN). This is done using the VLAN tag in the CDP advertisement. This is a great way for CDP listeners to find devices in the same broadcast domain.
How to Install CDP client:
To run CDP client application, you will need to install Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) on your PC / Laptop
Download the.zip file for the CDP client and decompress it to get the executable file
Start the CDP client executable file
Click on Cisco Discovery Protocol and enter the information shown in figure (the System information will be updated automatically):

A: The switch name
B: The port connected to your PC/laptop (connect to the switch with CDP enabled)
C: The VLAN associated with this port
(Optional) If you want to retrieve the VLAN information in the packet you can use the -vlan parameter and enter the VLAN number:

Click on Apply to save the settings and exit the application
How to use the CDP client:
Select the Cisco Discovery Protocol app from the Start Menu
Enter the information shown in figure below and click on Apply to save the settings and exit the application
